October 20, 2011 Rabindranath Tagore Centre, ICCR Kolkata presents in its Horizon Series Rabindranath Tagore’s 'Chandalika' (a production by Rangakarmee) Directed by Usha Ganguly Satyajit Ray Auditorium
RTC, ICCR, 9 A, Ho Chi Minh Sarani,
Kolkata - 700071. on Thursday, at 6.30 p.m.
As a part of Tagore’s 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations, Rangakarmee launched 'Rabindra Rangayatra' with two home productions 'Chandalika' and 'Manasi'.
Reworked by Usha Ganguly, Rangakarmee’s 'Chandalika' bypasses the commonly performed dance - drama, spotlighting the inexplicably neglected original prose play written in 1933. In this first Hindi version of Chandalika in decades, Usha Ganguly contrasts the mother as a coarse and cynical woman, with her daughter Prakriti as a delicate and sensitive girl, yet to realise the ways of the world. While showing the conflict of love in its varied forms, the play shows the stark realities of society - disparity, prejudice, exploitation and the universal search for love and happiness. This makes Chandalika written in 1933, relevant even today.
